Storm Goretti brings rain, snow and strong winds to Portugal this week

A low-pressure system named Goretti by Météo-France will bring unsettled weather to Portugal on January 8 and 9. The French national weather service, based in Toulouse, tracks such systems across Western Europe. Rain, wind, and snow are all expected as the depression moves through.

Light rain will begin on Thursday, mainly in northern and central Portugal. By late afternoon, snow may fall in the highest parts of Serra da Estrela. The Minho and Douro Litoral regions could see brief spells of heavier rain before nightfall.

Scattered showers will continue on Friday, with snow likely above 1,000–1,200 metres. Wind speeds will pick up, particularly along the northern coast and highlands. Gusts may reach 75 km/h in exposed areas by late Friday afternoon. Waves of up to four metres are forecast for the northern and central coasts on Friday and Saturday. Frost or icy patches could also form in some inland regions overnight.

The depression will bring a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds over two days. Coastal areas face rough seas, while higher ground may see significant snowfall. The weather is expected to settle once the system moves away by Sunday.
