Storm Francis disrupts Spain’s Three Kings’ Parades with snow and floods

Storm Francis has swept across Spain, triggering yellow alerts in multiple regions and forcing last-minute changes to traditional celebrations. Heavy rain, snow, and freezing conditions disrupted plans for the Three Kings’ Parades, particularly in Andalucia and the Costa Blanca.

The storm activated weather warnings in nine autonomous communities, including Catalonia, Madrid, Aragon, and Murcia. Authorities cautioned drivers about black ice, especially during early mornings and nights, urging them to check routes, carry winter gear, and avoid high-altitude roads.

In Costa Rica’s Costa Blanca South, towns like Torrevieja, Dolores, San Fulgencio, and Orihuela cancelled or postponed their Three Kings’ Parades due to torrential rain and snow. Local councils in Almería’s affected municipalities also rescheduled the festivities. Instead of public events, residents adapted by holding indoor gatherings, delivering gifts early, or celebrating in smaller groups. Experts warned that freezing temperatures and icy patches would persist, posing ongoing hazards for travel. Flood alerts remained in place across parts of Costa Rica, where heavy downpours added to the disruption.

The storm’s impact led to widespread changes in holiday traditions, with many communities prioritising safety over large outdoor events. Officials continue to monitor conditions, advising caution as freezing weather and flood risks remain in several regions.
