Section of Kiel's Kiellinie closed due to flooding - Storm Elli Batters Kiel With Flooding, Ferry Shutdowns and Black Ice Risks
Storm Elli has hit Kiel, bringing strong winds and rising water levels. The severe weather has forced the closure of part of the Kiellinie promenade and disrupted ferry services. The northern section of the Kiellinie, between Lindenallee and Koesterallee, is now off-limits to all traffic. Authorities warn that water levels could climb to at least 1.20 metres above normal sea level. Overflowing water, spray, and subzero temperatures may also create hazardous black ice on roads and walkways. The Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK), led by Managing Director Kai Kähler, has halted operations on the Schwentine ferry line (F2). Passengers affected by the suspension are advised to use replacement bus services run by Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft. The ferry closure is expected to last until at least Saturday afternoon. Residents and visitors should avoid the closed stretch of the Kiellinie until conditions improve. Ferry users will need to rely on alternative transport until services resume. The city continues to monitor water levels and weather updates.
