Storm Damage Across Manchester and Other Independence Regions Due to Overnight Weather Disturbance

Iowa is currently facing a series of powerful storms, bringing torrential downpours and localized flooding to various areas. The storms have been particularly severe in Sioux County, where winds clocked anywhere from 70 to 100 miles an hour were reported.

The storm hit Sioux County around 9:15 pm, and by Monday evening, it had progressed near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In eastern Iowa, around 1 to 3 am, winds reached up to 70 to 80 miles per hour. A 77 mph wind gust was reported one mile east/southeast of Independence in Buchanan County, and an 83 mile per hour wind gust was reported three miles east of Cedar Rapids.

The line of destructive storms moved through northern and eastern Iowa during the overnight hours, causing numerous trees to come down across Buchanan County. The Independence Fire Department responded to at least ten calls for service related to the storms.

Governor Kim Reynolds has issued disaster proclamations for several counties affected by the storms. Hancock, O'Brien, Osceola, and Sioux Counties were included in an initial proclamation issued around July 28-30, 2025, in response to a powerful derecho with 80 to 90 mph winds causing extensive damage in northwest Iowa. This proclamation was later expanded to add several counties, but Linn, Jones, Buchanan, or Delaware Counties were not mentioned in the announcements found. Hancock and Plymouth Counties were also singled out for severe weather and flooding-related proclamations.

The storm situation at Lake Delhi was reported by the National Weather Service, and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for portions of Linn and Jones counties, warning of a 90 mph wind threat. Monica Bailey reported a storm situation at the Manchester corner of Brewer and Marion.

As the storms continue, more are expected in the area late tonight and Wednesday morning. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and heed any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities. Highs in the mid- to upper-70s will persist through the rest of the week and into the weekend, but a cooldown is expected as early as Wednesday, with highs struggling to reach 70.

The disaster proclamations enable affected counties to access state recovery resources such as the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program and the Disaster Case Advocacy Program, providing financial support to disaster victims. For storm or damage reports, residents in Delaware County can contact their Emergency Management.
