Typhoon Podul Hits East Coast of Taiwan, Causes Evacuations and Flight Disruptions
Typhoon Podul made landfall in Taitung County on the east coast of Taiwan on August 13, 2025, causing more than 5,500 evacuations and leading to school closures and hundreds of flight cancellations.
The typhoon, which was forecast to pass through waters near Penghu last night, made landfall in Taitung County shortly after noon. The storm caused strong crosswinds at the airport, resulting in 26 inbound flights diverting at 3:19pm.
Trains between Chiayi County and Pingtung County's Fangliao Township were also affected, with all services being canceled after 3pm yesterday. However, both the Taiwan Railway Corp and the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp have announced that they expect to resume normal operations today.
Despite the storm's impact, no major structural damage was reported in Taiwan. However, one person was reported missing along the east coast. The storm then moved westward across southern Taiwan and exited near the west coast heading into the Taiwan Strait.
The typhoon's center was located 50km southwest of Penghu County as of 7pm yesterday, according to reports. Podul was moving northwest at a speed of 34kph and had slightly weakened after its structure was damaged by Taiwan's topography.
International and domestic flights, except those to Kinmen County, are expected to return to normal. Podul is forecast to pass through waters near Penghu last night and make landfall in China through southern coastal areas near Kinmen before dawn today.
This information is based on reports from August 12-13, 2025.
