Veteran footballer and manager Robbie Keane has recounted an unexpected injury he sustained during Ferencvaros' recent Hungarian league title celebrations. The former Tottenham and Liverpool striker, now the coach of the Budapest club, accidentally struck his forehead with the league trophy while lifting it in front of the fans, necessitating three stitches.

Ferencvaros clinched their 36th league title with a 2-1 victory over Gyor on the final day of the season under Keane's guidance. Excited by the title win, the celebrations were fervent, culminating in the peculiar injury for the 44-year-old. Keane later disclosed the details on Instagram, sharing a video of his bloodied forehead and providing an account of the incident.

"I was lifting the trophy last night and the back of it hit my head. So, I had to get three stitches from the doctor," Keane commented on the video. He joked in his post that the blow was insignificant compared to the triumph of landing the third trophy in his managerial career.

A week later, Keane joined Sam Matterface, Alex Crook, and Troy Deeney on talkSPORT to discuss the title win. The Irishman humorously noted his injury, stating, "I'm wearing a hat because I got stitches from lifting the trophy!"

Following the memorable title triumph for Ferencvaros, they will participate in the second qualifying round for next season's Champions League. While the injury was a brief setback, Keane looked ahead to the challenges with enthusiasm. "There's a lot of lessons to learn from myself and the club," he said. "We know that we have to improve and get better. Especially as we're going to be in Europe next year."

Robbie Keane took on the managerial role of Ferencvaros at the start of the year after leaving Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he had overseen their Israeli Premier League victory during his tenure. Prior to this, he had held assistant manager positions, initially with Mick McCarthy for the Irish national team and subsequently with Middlesbrough and Leeds.

Regarding potential managerial opportunities in England, Keane expressed no immediate desire to return to the shores where he spent much of his playing and coaching career. "I'm in Europe," he stated when asked about managing an English club. "I had a call yesterday with somebody, an interview as well, and they asked me [that question]. I'm not from England. I'm from Ireland." Keane emphasized that he wanted to find a suitable club abroad to apply his distinctive coaching style without the need for compromise.

While Keane is adamant about steering clear of the Championship, he did not altogether rule out a future in England. "I'd never rule it out [a job in England]. I'd love to eventually come back at some stage," he admitted. For now, however, he relishes the opportunity to test himself as a coach on the continent.
