The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the oldest still-existing party in Germany and indeed in Europe, recently held an extraordinary members' meeting to honour its jubilarians. A total of 26 members from three cohorts, with membership lengths ranging from 25 to 70 years, were invited to celebrate this momentous occasion.

A Brief History of the SPD

The SPD was formed in 1875 through the merger of smaller socialist groups, such as the General German Workers' Association (1863) and the Social Democratic Workers' Party (1869). This consolidation led to the formation of the Socialist Workers' Party of Germany, which later became the SPD in 1890.

Throughout its history, the SPD has faced challenges and adversity, but it has continued to grow in influence and importance. During the period of anti-socialist laws under Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1878-1890), the SPD faced significant legal restrictions, but it continued to grow in popularity and influence.

Key Moments of Political Resistance

One of the most significant periods of resistance for the SPD was during the anti-socialist laws (1878-1890), which showcased the party's resilience and commitment to social democratic ideals. Another pivotal moment came when the SPD's decision to support Germany's war efforts in 1914 led to a split within the party, with anti-war factions forming the Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany (USPD) and the more radical Spartacist League.

The SPD also played a crucial role in the German Revolution (1918-1919), leading to the establishment of the Weimar Republic. Friedrich Ebert, an SPD leader, became the first president of Germany in 1919.

Party Milestones

The SPD's founding marked the beginning of organized socialism in Germany. By the 1912 German federal election, the SPD had become the largest party in the Reichstag. The party played a central role in the establishment of Germany's first democratic republic after World War I. Kurt Schumacher's leadership helped restore the SPD as a major political force in West Germany after World War II.

The Celebratory Event

The event, held at the SPD local branch Sterkrade-Süd on November 25, 2022, was a heartfelt gathering. Not all invitees were present due to health reasons or other circumstances. Dr. Jörg Schröer, the local branch chairman, welcomed several jubilarians and members. The keynote speech was given by Manfred Flore, the mayor, who reflected on 150 years of SPD history.

After dinner, everyone sat together, chatting about past and current topics. Each present jubilarian received a certificate and an honorary pin. The event continued with a relaxed, hearty green cabbage dinner, and the evening concluded with a spirit of camaraderie and shared history.

The SPD's continued influence and its commitment to social welfare, labor rights, and progressive policies are a testament to its enduring significance in German politics. The celebratory event served as a reminder of the party's rich history and the dedication of its members.
