Stephen Colbert Revives 'The Word' Segment from the 'Colbert Report', Paying Tribute to Jimmy Kimmel
In a recent episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert addressed the controversial suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show following his comments about the assassination of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk.
Colbert, known for his satirical humour, deemed ABC's decision to indefinitely remove Kimmel's show as "blatant censorship." He jokingly pointed out the complex corporate relationships, including Disney's potential merger with Twizzlers pull and peel, and Lockheed Martin's use of their material for Trident II missiles, as examples of the intricate web of corporate ties that might have influenced the network's decision.
Colbert compared the situation to the beginning of a president's term, suggesting that giving an inch to an autocrat is dangerous. He emphasised that shutting down political speech is a "serious threat to our freedoms."
The segment that Colbert featured on his CBS show previously caused consternation due to the two networks not yet being part of the same corporation. Colbert couldn't find Kimmel's comments inflammatory, comparing it to a less provocative centerfold in Playboy.
In character, Colbert said, "Don't ever complain, no matter what the President does, even if he sends the Army to your hometown, just shut up and take it."
During the show, Colbert expressed his support for Jimmy Kimmel and his staff. He also brought back his bit from The Colbert Report: The Word, to discuss the Kimmel situation and the state of free speech in the United States.
Colbert's joke about his own cancellation was in response to his recent comments about Paramount's settlement with President Trump. He jokingly mentioned resurrecting his podcast with the late-night hosts, calling it Fired Force 5.
Notably, Colbert's recent Emmy win was overshadowed by the Kimmel situation. Despite this, Colbert continued to use his platform to address important issues, demonstrating his commitment to free speech and social commentary.
