Stendal District's 49-Euro Ticket Saga Continues

The ongoing saga of the 49-euro ticket in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt, is far from over. After the state announced an extra 10 million euros in additional costs for the districts, the district council has scheduled a meeting on December 20 to discuss the ticket's continuation once more. The district announced this decision on Friday, leaving the future of the ticket uncertain.

Last week, the district council failed to approve a resolution recognizing the Deutschlandticket within the district. Consequently, the ticket would lose its validity on buses within Stendal from January 1. This development sparked a nationwide outcry, with passenger association Pro Bahn warning of the "death of the Deutschlandticket." The underlying reason was an additional cost of 40,000 euros until April.

Stendal district administrator Patrick Puhlmann (SPD) commented that the state had taken a significant step toward municipalities. "In my personal opinion, we should now take the small step and extend the Deutschlandticket until April 30, 2024." Puhlmann voted in favor of an extension last week and plans to do so again on December 20.

Insights

It is important to note that the district council initially decided to remove the 49-euro ticket's validity from January 1, 2024, due to additional costs. However, the council later reversed this decision, and the ticket remains valid in the Stendal district[1].
