Stellantis Steps Up to Fill the Electrified Financing Gap

In a surprising turn of events, automaker Stellantis is stepping in to provide financial assistance for electric vehicle (EV) buyers affected by the sudden cessation of government subsidies in Germany. This move affects Peugeot, Opel, Fiat, and Jeep customers who ordered EVs, even those yet to place an order.

After the German government abruptly halted the electric car subsidy program introduced in 2016, Stellantis announced its intention to cover the full environmental bonus, worth up to 6750 euros, for eligible EVs ordered by the end of the year. Customers who placed earlier orders and registered their vehicles by February 29, 2024, will also receive a reduced bonus of up to 4500 euros, given as an additional discount.

Industry analysts and organizations voiced their concerns following the announcement, citing budgetary issues and the impact on new EV buyers, with the ADAC requesting manufacturers to introduce more affordable EV options.

Stellantis' Commitment in the Face of Uncertainty

Lars Bialkowski, Stellantis Germany CEO, responded to the decision with a statement of surprise yet commitment to customers. The company is investing in alternative strategies, not just to fill the gap left by the government subsidies, but also to bolster its sales and market presence.

While electronic vehicle incentives are not a primary focus for Stellantis, the company is pursuing various initiatives to boost its popularity and sales performance, particularly in the United States. These strategies include:

  1. Increased Marketing and Advertising Budget: Stellantis is reallocating a portion of its marketing funds to recapture pre-pandemic advertising levels, such as during the highly-viewed Super Bowl.
  2. Competitive Dealer Incentive Programs: The company is unveiling a sales-stimulating incentive program for its dealers, aiming to maintain dealer confidence and sustain sales.
  3. Expanded Product Lineup: By offering more economical trim options, such as the Ram 1500, and introducing new gas and hybrid models, Stellantis is targeting a broader array of vehicle buyers.
  4. Restoring Dealer Relationships: Stellantis is prioritizing openness and alleviating operational constraints that were detrimental to relationships with its dealership network during previous leadership.

In the shifting landscape of electric vehicle incentives, Stellantis is a driver of change, committing to support customers in a time of financial uncertainty and enhancing its market position with innovative strategies.
