Stellantis Explores New Models for Idle Brampton Plant Amidst Trade Uncertainty

Prime Minister Mark Carney has revealed that Stellantis is exploring new models for its idle Brampton plant. However, a final decision hinges on greater trade certainty. This comes amidst Stellantis' controversial move of Jeep Compass production to Illinois, violating union commitments.

The Brampton plant has been dormant for 18 months, with retooling paused since February. Stellantis' recent $13-billion U.S. manufacturing expansion includes shifting Jeep Compass production to Illinois, leaving the Brampton plant's future uncertain. Unifor, the union representing Stellantis workers, was not informed of any alternative plans for the Brampton plant. The union has not received firm plans regarding the plant's future.

The decision to move Jeep Compass production to Illinois comes a week after U.S. President Donald Trump and his commerce secretary threatened action against Canada's auto industry. Canadian political leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, have urged Stellantis to honor commitments to Brampton employees. Ford stated that Stellantis had agreed to postpone the decision for a year and find a new model for the Brampton factory. Carney has since revealed that Stellantis is considering new plants for the site, but a final decision requires more trade certainty.

Stellantis' decision to move Jeep Compass production to Illinois has raised concerns about the Brampton plant's future. While Stellantis is exploring new plants for the site, a final decision awaits greater trade certainty. The upcoming renewal of the USMCA next year adds to the uncertainty over potential longer-term tariffs for Canadian automotive production.
