In his annual Christmas address, President Steinmeier implored Germans to keep faith in democracy amid rising doubts and fears. "We yearn for clarity, and it's right to expect leaders to chart the right path," he said, but urged against giving in to anger and contempt in times of uncertainty. Rather, he advocated for courage and cooperation as the "better advisors" when navigating the complexities of democracy.

As the world grapples with its darker side, marked by suffering, destruction, hatred, and violence, Steinmeier underscored the importance of unity. In a challenging year, he lauded the countless individuals who step up with determination and courage, safeguarding society's peace and tranquility.

Looking ahead, Germany will commemorate its 75th anniversary of democracy next year. Steinmeier touted his nation's constitution as a symbol of pride and a steady foundation that has weathered adversity. He exhorted everyone to trust in this foundation, reminding everyone that "Germany is, and will remain, a good country."

Though skepticism and fear are rampant, initiatives like the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) strive to empower local activists, build resilience in democracies, foster international cooperation, promote democratic values, and address authoritarianism. Organizations like Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) advocate hope, boldness, and collective action, turning doubts into determination and fear into faith.

By emphasizing courage and cooperation in the face of adversity, these initiatives help dispel skepticism and fear, providing light in the darkest corners of our global democratic challenges.
