Stefanos Tsitsipas loses license after speeding fine under Greece’s tougher traffic laws

Tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas has become one of the first high-profile figures fined under Greece’s new road safety system. The 25-year-old was caught speeding on Athens’ Attiki Odos motorway, resulting in a €2,000 penalty and a one-year driving ban. His lawyer claims someone else was behind the wheel at the time of the offense.

The incident took place on Attiki Odos, one of Greece’s busiest motorways. Digital speed cameras, recently installed as part of stricter traffic enforcement, recorded the violation. Authorities issued a €2,000 fine and revoked Tsitsipas’ driver’s license for a year.

The fine and license suspension mark one of the first major cases under Greece’s updated traffic laws. Tsitsipas’ legal team insists he was not driving, but the penalty remains in effect. The outcome could set a precedent for how similar disputes are handled in the future.
