Steelers suffer a defeat in the preseason, with Jags' Cam Little stunningly scoring a 70-yard field goal
Jaguars' Kicker Cam Little Falls Short of NFL Record with 70-yard Field Goal
In a thrilling preseason game, Jacksonville Jaguars rookie kicker Cam Little attempted a 70-yard field goal against the Pittsburgh Steelers, coming close to breaking the NFL record for the longest field goal. However, the kick did not set a new record as it was made during a preseason game.
Little's remarkable attempt, which would have shattered the previous record by 4 yards, was successful in closing the Jaguars' deficit. The kick, made at halftime by the first-year head coach Liam Coen's decision, brought the score to 14-9 in favour of the Steelers.
Despite falling short of the record, Little's 70-yard kick is notable as possibly the longest field goal made in any football game in history, surpassing a 69-yard college field goal set by Ove Johansson in 1976. The Pro Football Hall of Fame even requested Little’s game-worn cleat and jersey, recognising its uniqueness.
Last season, as a rookie, Little made 27 out of 29 field-goal attempts (93.1 percent) and all 27 extra-point attempts. His longest field goal during the season was 59 yards. In the 50-yard and longer range, Little was successful 5 out of 6 times.
The current official NFL record is held by Justin Tucker’s 66-yard field goal made in a regular season game on September 21, 2021, against the Detroit Lions at domed Ford Field. Despite Little's impressive performance, his 70-yard kick does not officially break the record due to NFL rules excluding preseason statistics from record consideration.
The game was the preseason opener for both the Jaguars and the Steelers. Despite Little's heroic effort, the Jaguars lost the game with a final score of 31-25. Liam Coen expressed disappointment that the 70-yard field goal did not set a new NFL record. Nonetheless, Little's performance in the preseason game showcases his potential as a promising young talent in the NFL.
