Although General Manager Omar Khan initially expressed interest in extending Pickens' contract, the Steelers eventually decided to let him go, potentially recognizing the urgency to capitalize on his value before the expiration of his rookie contract. The Cowboys, in search of a formidable WR2 to partner with CeeDee Lamb, aggressively courted Pickens and clinched the deal by trading a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick to Pittsburgh, while receiving Pickens and a 2027 sixth-round pick in return.
The trade prompted satisfaction on the Steelers' side, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo, stating that the Steelers "got the best trade return they could for Pickens, and you can't fault them for that if they deemed it necessary to move on from him." This suggests that the offer from Dallas was strong enough for management to justify the move, as other offers were deemed insufficient.
With Pickens now in the past, it appears he's more focused on his new beginnings. "I'm more of like a, be where I'm at right now, where my feet at," Pickens expressed on Thursday. "So can't even really think about it in the past. I'm just glad to be a Cowboy."
Despite Pickens' departure, the Steelers' wide receiver room will undeniably take a hit, even considering the offseason acquisition of DK Metcalf. This has raised questions about whether the trade should have occurred pre-draft rather than post-draft. Nevertheless, the Steelers remain optimistic, with Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, and Roman Wilson serving as their remaining wide receivers.
