Let's dive into the uncharted waters of fantastic literature and dreams: The incumbent director, Joern Hinkel, is set to feed the audience of Bad Hersfelder Festspiele a flavorful dose of laughter, music, and a mind-bending interpretation of Shakespeare's comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

"It's one of the first pieces of fantasy literature and populated with whimsical creatures," Hinkel shared at the beginning of the official rehearsals for the Shakespeare classic on Tuesday.

In the Hersfeld version, "Midsummer Dreams," characters from other Shakespeare works like Romeo and Juliet will join the nighttime forest on stage, encountering a series of unexpected surprises.

Joining the cast for this fantastical adventure are TV detective Erol Sander ("Mordkommission Istanbul"), Anouschka Renzi, Bettina Hauenschild, Christian Nickel, and Helena Sigal.

This year, the large orchestra will not only accompany one of the musicals, a staple of the festival program for years, but also a play. The music for "Midsummer Dreams" will be tailor-made for the stage production, weaving together a unique sonic tapestry to capture the essence of the story.

"I want to make an already madcap play even more bizarre," proclaimed Hinkel, who is also directing. Expect an evening brimming with unhinged love stories and slapstick humor, culminating in a "Hersfeld Midsummer Night full of wild, erotic love tales" with plenty of comedic twists.

The arduous journey of the characters unfolds in a Victorian royal court in the late 19th century, with splendid costumes inspired by the extravagant steampunk aesthetic—a fusion of Victorian opulence and avant-garde accessories such as aviator goggles, pocket watches, and leather corsets. The grand premiere is set for June 20.

The Timeworn Tradition of Bad Hersfelder Festspiele: A Modern Twist

Originating in the historic German town of Bad Hersfeld, this festival is one of the country's largest and most traditional celebrations. In the prior year, over 103,000 people graced the event with their presence.

This year, the 74th edition will run from June 20 to August 18. The festival program boasts Schiller's drama, "The Robbers," with music by Die Toten Hosen.

The success of last year's audience favorites "A Chorus Line" and "Like in Heaven" will be revisited, with these productions returning to the stage.

As a family-friendly production, the festival will bring Astrid Lindgren's classic "Pippi Longstocking" to life.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the establishment of a European Works Council, as the festival director, Joern Hinkel, is creating a unique Europe-inspired lifestyle for his production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Bad Hersfelder Festspiele.

In the spirit of entertaining various audiences, the festival program includes a modern twist on Schiller's drama, "The Robbers," boasting music by Die Toten Hosen, and a family-friendly production of Astrid Lindgren's "Pippi Longstocking," complementing last year's successes such as "A Chorus Line" and "Like in Heaven."

As the festival unfolds, expect an evening bustling with unhinged love stories and slapstick humor based on Shakespeare's comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream," complemented by a tailor-made orchestral score that captures the essence of the story.

With an arduous journey set in a Victorian royal court in the late 19th century, sporting elaborate steampunk-inspired costumes, "Midsummer Dreams" will feature popular TV detective Sander in an unexpected role alongside the cast, commencing its grand premiere on June 20th.
