Tinkerwork Wonders and Dreamy Nights: Joern Hinkel's Steam-infused 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' Kicks off at Bad Hersfelder Festspiele
Steampunk Rehearsals Underway for Shakespeare Festival - Steampunk-Style Shakespearean Rehearsal Ahead of Upcoming Fests
Glimpse into whimsical realms where laughter transcends fear: The departing artistic helmsman, Joern Hinkel, aims to serve a delightful helping of lively entertainment and melodious tunes to this summer's Bad Hersfelder Festspiele attendees as they witnesses the dramatic revision of Shakespeare's merry fantasy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
"This iconic tale of the initial wave of fantasy narratives is home to fantastical beings," Hinkel shared during a rehearsal briefing on Tuesday for the upcoming Shakespearean romp.
In the Hersfeld reworking, "Midsummer Enchantments," assorted figures from other Shakespearean tales will tread the boards in the moonlit woodland and encounter unexpected surprises alongside the play's central figures.
Actors such as TV detective Erol Sander ("Mordkommission Istanbul"), Anouschka Renzi, Bettina Hauenschild, Christian Nickel, and Helena Sigal have been tapped to grace the stage with steampunk inspiration.
For the first time this season, the orchestra will not only provide music for one of the musicals that have long been incorporated into the festival's program, but also a play. A specially composed score for "Midsummer Enchantments" will serenade audiences.
Hinkel, who doubles as the show's director, promises to amplify the initial madness of the play. Audiences are in for a "Head-spinning Midsummer Night filled with outrageous and sensual love stories paired with slapstick" implausibilities, all to unfold within a steampunk-themed Victorian royal court in the late 19th century. A gala premiere performance is scheduled for June 20.
Meanwhile, the 74th edition of the Bad Hersfeld festival, one of Germany's largest and oldest open-air theater events, attracted 103,000 attendants last year.
Joining the roster for this year's festival, which runs from June 20 to August 18, is Schiller's "The Robbers" set to feature music by Die Toten Hosen. The return of the Broadway musical "A Chorus Line" and the show "Like in Heaven" will keep drawn in eager audiences from last season.
The festival will also bring Astrid Lindgren's beloved classic "Pippi Longstocking" to life as a family-friendly stage production.
