Steampunk-Inspired Shakespeare Performance Commences for Upcoming Festival - "Steampunk Revamp of Shakespearean Plays - Preparations for Upcoming Festivals"

Wisp away the gloom, serve up a zestful elixir for the soul: The outgoing Artistic Director Joern Hinkel intends to dishing out a hearty helping of chuckles and music for this year's Bad Hersfelder Festspiele audience with a steampunk-infused rendition of Shakespeare's fantastical comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

"This piece, one of the initial works of fantasy literature, is teeming with mystical creatures," Hinkel remarked at the commencement of rehearsals on Tuesday, speaking about the Bard's celebrated classic.

In the Hersfeld rendition, dubbed "Steampunk Midsummer Dreams," characters from other Shakespearean works such as Romeo and Juliet will also wander into the dark, moonlit forest on stage, finding themselves in the midst of extraordinary surprises.

Performers gracing the stage in this production inspired by the tomes of William Shakespeare include TV detective Erol Sander ("Mordkommission Istanbul"), Anouschka Renzi, Bettina Hauenschild, Christian Nickel, and Helena Sigal.

For the very first time this year, the grand orchestra will not only accompany one of the musical selections in the festival program but also a play. The score for "Steampunk Midsummer Dreams" will be especially composed for the performance.

A Mad Splash of Lunacy

"I want to make this already bizarre play even more outrageous," Hinkel declared, directing the production as well. The festivities will feature a "Hersfeld Midsummer Night full of wild and erotic love stories" punctuated by anarchic humor.

The topsy-turvy escapades of the characters unfold in a grandiose Victorian court in the waning years of the 19th century. The costumes, according to Hinkel, will be inspired by steampunk domains—an elegant dance between Victorian splendor and steam-powered paraphernalia, complete with aviator spectacles, pocket watches, and leather corsets. The premiere is on June 20.

Schiller's "The Robbers" with music by Die Toten Hosen and a reunion with the Broadway musical "A Chorus Line" is also on the agenda for the festival.

For family audiences, the festival presents Astrid Lindgren's beloved classic, "Ronja the Robber's Daughter."
