A MAD, SENSUAL, STEAMPUNK WONDERLAND: JOERN HINKEL'S REIMAGINED "A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM" GETS IN GEAR
Steampunk Adaptation of Shakespeare's Work Commences for Annual Festival - Steampunk-inspired rendition of Shakespeare's plays undergoing practice sessions for upcoming festivals
Get ready to step into a whimsical, mechanical world: Joern Hinkel, the outgoing artistic director, is cooking up a steam-powered, sultry, and hilarious spectacle with a fresh take on Shakespeare’s comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" for this year's Bad Hersfelder Festspiele.
"It's one of the first works of fantasy literature, brimming with fantastical creatures," Hinkel proclaimed at the kickoff of rehearsals for this classic Shakespeare masterpiece.
In the Hersfeld edition, expect a collision of characters from other Shakespeare works such as Romeo and Juliet in the enchanted forest, woven into unexpected stories.
When the curtain rises, stars including TV detective Erol Sander ("Mordkommission Istanbul"), Anouschka Renzi, Bettina Hauenschild, Christian Nickel, and Helena Sigal will populate this mechanical dreamland.
Making its debut this year, the large orchestra will provide the soundtrack for not just one of the musicals but a play as well, with the score for "Midsummer Dreams" specially composed for the production.
Hinkel, also acting as director, promises to unleash an already erratic play into a veritable chaos. It's going to be a "Hersfeld Midsummer Night" brimming with wild, erotic love stories laced with slapstick humor.
The characters' adventures will unfold in a late 19th-century Victorian royal court amidst a world of Steampunk opulence, filled with gears, gadgets, and fashionable accessories like aviator goggles, pocket watches, or leather corsets. The grand premiere is set for June 20.
The Bad Hersfeld festivals in eastern Hesse remain some of the most significant and traditional in Germany, hosting over 103,000 spectators last year.
The 74th edition, running from June 20 to August 18, is slated to include Schiller's drama "The Robbers" set to music by die Toten Hosen, a reprise of the audience-favorite Broadway musical "A Chorus Line," the play "Like in Heaven," and a family-friendly adaptation of Astrid Lindgren's "Ronja the Robber's Daughter."
