Starlit Laughter: Shakespeare's Dream in Steampunk Reality - Rehearsals Commence
Steampunk-Influenced Shakespearean Rehearsals Kick Off – Festival Play Preparations Commence - Steampunk adaptation of Shakespeare's works undergoes rehearsals for upcoming festivals
Here's the lowdown: Artistic director Joern Hinkel aims to doll out jests and jubilations for this year's Bad Hersfeld Festival crowd with a fresh take on Shakespeare's comic gem, "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
Hinkel shared his thoughts on the official commencement of rehearsals for the Shakespearean classic on Tuesday, declaring, "It's one of the first works of folklore and fantastical tales, brimming with mysterious characters."
The Bad Hersfeld remix, dubbed "Midsummer Dreams," will be a smorgasbord of characters from other Shakespearean tales, like Romeo and Juliet, spiraling their way into the nightwood's strange happenings.
The ensemble includes the likes of TV detective Erol Sander ("Mordkommission Istanbul"), Anouschka Renzi, Bettina Hauenschild, Christian Nickel, and Helena Sigal.
In a novel twist, a vast orchestra will accompany the ode to madness, marking the first time it has backed a play instead of a musical. The tunes will be custom-composed just for "Midsummer Dreams."
Hinkel, as the director, plans to add a dash of insanity to the already insane play, promising a "Hersfeld Midsummer Night brimming with wild and erotic love stories" seasoned with slapstick humor.
The plot unfolds at a regal Victorian court in the late 19th century, with Steampunk-inspired attire gracing the stage. Costumes will be a fusion of opulent Victorian finery and practical gadgets such as aviator goggles, pocket watches, and leather corsets. The first act hits the stage on June 20.
Schiller's "The Robbers" with Die Toten Hosen's musical brilliance completes the lineup for the events spanning from June 20 to August 18.
The 74th edition also promises a resurgence of Broadway's "A Chorus Line," the play "Like in Heaven," and family production of Astrid Lindgren's classic, "Ronja the Robber's Daughter."
