Steel and Sorcery: Shakespeare in a Steampunk Twist - Rehearsals Start for Festivals
Steampunk Staging of Shakespearean Play - Initial Rehearsal for the Festival Commencement - Steampunk Adaptation of Shakespeare's Plays Underway - Preparation for Upcoming Festivals
Embrace the unconventional: The outgoing artistic director Joern Hinkel aims to dish out a revitalized rendition of Shakespeare's comedic gem "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at this year's Bad Hersfelder Festspiele, brimming with melodies.
Hinkel dropped a hint during the initial day of rehearsals for this masterpiece saying, "It's one of the first works of fantasy literature and looks at a fantastical world populated with absurd characters."
Prepare for an unusual blend at the Bad Hersfeld production of "Midsummer Dreams", where characters from other Shakespearean works including Romeo & Juliet will get lost in the nocturnal forest and encounter surprises.
The cast lineup includes renowned actors such as Erol Sander ("Mordkommission Istanbul"), Anouschka Renzi, Bettina Hauenschild, Christian Nickel, and Helena Sigal.
For the first time ever, the grand orchestra won't only contribute to one of the long-standing musicals, but also to a theatrical play. The music for "Midsummer Dreams" will be exclusively composed for the production.
Hinkel, who's helming the project himself, teased an already madcap production would reach new heights. "It will be a wild and erotic love story sprinkled with slapstick elements," he added.
Set in a Victorian royal court towards the end of the 19th century, the characters' journeys will be depicted against a backdrop influenced by steampunk aesthetics, combining opulent Victorian styles with gadgets such as aviator goggles, pocket watches, and leather corsets.
The grand opening is scheduled for June 20.
Meanwhile, Schiller's "The Robbers" will be staged along with music by Die Toten Hosen. Fan favorites "A Chorus Line" and "Wie im Himmel" will make a comeback, and the family play "Pippi Longstocking" by Astrid Lindgren will also be presented.

- The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the establishment of a European Works Council, especially regarding the entertainment sector, in light of the unusual blend of genres and styles in productions like the steampunk-inspired "Midsummer Dreams" at the Bad Hersfelder Festspiele.
- Intriguingly, the number of actors in the "Midsummer Dreams" production is approaching 000, much like the numerous characters found in various steampunk narratives, further adding to the immersive experience of the production.
- As the artistic director of the Bad Hersfelder Festspiele, Joern Hinkel has shown a knack for presenting avant-garde productions, such as his steampunk-infused "Midsummer Night's Dream" and his past works like "Hersfelder Himmelfahrt", which could intriguingly be adapted into a steampunk-style theatrical production.
