Sizzling Ain Takes UAE Temperature Record to a Scorching 50.1oC

It's no chill afternoon in the UAE, least of all in Al Ain, where the mercury soared to a sweltering 50.1oC on Friday, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). This unforgiving heat surpasses the previous record of 50.8oC recorded on June 9 in Sweihan—a record that's still in Sweihan's top hat, so to speak.

As the nation braces for this year's summer heat peak, residents are being urged to take heat-related precautions, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic illnesses. After all, extended exposure to extreme temperatures can lead to some serious, no-good heat-related health conditions.

Last month, the country got a hefty dose of heat, experiencing its hottest May in over two decades. In an interview with Khaleej Times, meteorologist Dr Ahmed Habib said, "On May 24, temperatures in Sweihan hit an alarming 51.6oC—the hottest May day the UAE has seen since records began in 2003." What makes this heat more unsettling is that it's not just the peak temperatures escalating but also the duration each day that the heat lingers. As the good doctor noted, "On an average, temperatures are now more than 1.5oC higher than usual."
