Rail Revival in Swabia - Line Ahead of Reactivation - Staudenbahn Revival: 13-KM Railway Line Near Completion

The reactivation of a 13-kilometer railway line between Gessertshausen and Langenneufnach in Swabia is nearing its final phase. Known as the Staudenbahn, the line could resume operations by late 2028, following a modernization project expected to take around two years.

A public consultation is currently ongoing, allowing residents to review planning documents online until November 19 and submit objections until January 19, 2026. The modernization, led under the supervision of the government of Upper Bavaria, aims to upgrade the line to facilitate hourly trains reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h, connecting it to Augsburg Central Station.

The reopening timeline is subject to necessary upgrades at Gessertshausen station, which serves as a connection to Deutsche Bahn’s network. The estimated investment for the northern Staudenbahn is €65 million, with up to 90 percent expected to come from federal subsidies.

The Staudenbahn reactivation project is progressing, with a potential completion date set for late 2028. Residents are encouraged to participate in the ongoing public consultation to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the modernization.
