Statistics for Game Week 10

This past weekend witnessed a busy schedule in the DSTV Premiership, with matches spread across Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The focus was on Kaizer Chiefs, who, under interim head coach Calvin Johnson, aimed to revive their campaign.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates contended with two games within three days due to their early-season CAF commitments. SuperSport United burdensed Royal AM with additional woes.

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 2-1 loss against Lamontville Golden Arrows in their opening match under Johnson. Knox Mutizwa netted a brace for Arrows, while Sifiso Hlanti scored a consolation goal for Chiefs. The defeat marks the fifth league loss for the team this season.

Regardless of the defeat, Chiefs have continued to create chances, much like in previous games and seasons. However, their inability to convert these chances has been a persistent issue. As they approach the third of their league campaign, their table performance is far from satisfactory, with 11 points from 10 games (3 wins, 2 draws, and 5 losses) and a goal-scoring record of 9 for and 8 against.

Orlando Pirates, on the other hand, have had a challenging run, having played games thick and fast in the league and the Telkom Knockout. They managed to secure only two points from two games last week and this weekend, stirring frustration among their fans. Top scorer Zakhele Lepasa made minimal appearances as a substitute, allowing Evidence Makgopa to have playing time. Despite this, Makgopa has not been able to replicate the shot-creation rate of Pirates' other forwards. Last week, Pirates managed 13 shots against AmaZulu FC, and 18 shots against Polokwane City, with Evidence Makgopa contributing 2 shots against AmaZulu FC but none against Polokwane City.

SuperSport United registered another impressive performance, finishing the game week third on the log. They inflicted a 3-1 defeat on Royal AM, marking the third time Royal AM have conceded three or more goals this season (previously against Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC). SuperSport United also scored three goals for the first time this league campaign.

Other notable results saw Chippa United and AmaZulu FC draw 1-1, TS Galaxy defeat Sekhukhune United 2-0, Richards Bay lose to Cape Town City FC 1-3.

The midweek action continues on Wednesday with two games - TS Galaxy against SuperSport United and Cape Town Spurs hosting Orlando Pirates.

As of the latest update, the top teams in the league are:

  • Mamelodi Sundowns: 1st
  • Orlando Pirates: 2nd
  • Stellenbosch FC: 3rd
  • Sekhukhune United: 4th [2][4].

In the DSTV Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs, despite their loss to Lamontville Golden Arrows, have consistently created scoring opportunities, a pattern seen in their past matches. On the other hand, Orlando Pirates, despit their recent struggles, continue to test defenses with their high shot creation, as indicated by their 13 shots against AmaZulu FC and 18 shots against Polokwane City.
