Western Pomerania-Greifswald: Selling Karlsburg Castle for 250k Euros

The state government in Vorpommern-Greifswald aims to offload Karlsburg Castle, valued at around one million euros in 2019, for a mere 250,000 euros. The potential buyer, Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn, is a property mogul who transformed Ulrichshusen Castle in the Mecklenburg Lake District into a hotel and festival hub.

Despite the castle's estimated market value, the bidding process didn't yield the expected results. The leading bidder initially proposed 200,000 euros but later withdrew due to increased construction costs and monument protection requirements.

To address potential contaminated sites and protection concerns, von Maltzahn agreed to special regulations. He has until 2024 to carry out soil tests and negotiations with the monument protection authority before finalizing the purchase.

The state deems Karlsburg Castle unnecessary and thus seeks acceptance from the parliament to complete the sale, as it qualifies as a significant state property. Plans involve revitalization, transforming the castle into a medical professional training center, elderly care housing, community facility, and tourist attraction. The Karlsburg Diabetes Clinic sits nearby.
