Student Struggles: Lower Saxony Pupils Report Severe Stress
The Lower Saxony State Student Council voiced concerns over the mounting stress among students. The state's educational landscape is currently on the brink, according to council representatives, mainly as a result of the severely curtailed academic year. Despite the reduction in lesson content, lessons are being canceled at an alarming rate due to the teacher shortage. As a consequence, many students are feeling deeply anxious and sleep-deprived due to the overwhelming workload.
Louisa Basner, the acting Chairwoman of the Lower Saxony State Student Council, expressed her concern. "The situation is so precarious," she said, "many students are extremely stressed and struggling to cope." The council has identified the need for immediate intervention and called for a shift in focus towards the essentials, given the high number of missed lessons.
One of the proposed solutions includes extending the exam period and limiting students to a maximum of two exams per week. In addition to this, there is a necessity to fortify the presence of school psychologists and abolish homework in full-day schools.
Matteo Feind, Basner's deputy, stressed the importance of reevaluating the school system's primary objective. "The current educational system is outdated," he said. "We need to acknowledge that the goal of education is to impart knowledge, not to promote sporadic rote learning."
The council advocates for the deployment of more school psychologists to alleviate the mental strain faced by students. As schools struggle to fill vacant teaching positions, numerous lessons are suspended, resulting in an escalating workload and stress for pupils.
