Rude Politicians in North Rhine-Westphalia's State Parliament to Face Financial Penalties
In an attempt to maintain decorum and prevent hate speech in its debates, the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia is set to introduce a new fine system for politicians who misbehave. The four major parties, CDU, SPD, Greens, and FDP, have agreed to this measure. According to reports, the first offense would result in a fine of €1000, while a repeat offense would see the offending politician hit with a €2000 penalty.
Düsseldorf-based politician Andre Kuper, the President of the state parliament and a CDU member, spearheaded this proposal. Kuper expressed his concerns over the disrespectful behavior exhibited by some politicians, which he believes has turned parliamentary debates into platforms for provocation, hatred, and agitation. He believes that the degradation of the parliament is no longer acceptable and that those who mock democracy and ridicule MPs should be held accountable.
Kuper asserts that previous warnings and reprimands have been perceived as trophies by some politicians. To address this issue, the state parliament needs a sanction that has tangible consequences. The proposed fine is expected to be deducted directly from the salaries of the offending politicians, making it a noticeable financial penalty.
Since the start of the current legislative period, the state parliament's Presidium has dished out 47 reprimands and warnings to politicians who have stepped out of line.
