State Government of Lagos Responds to Ikorodu Flooding Incident (Visual Material)
The ongoing drainage project in Ijede, Ikorodu, Lagos State, launched six months ago by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is making significant strides towards providing a permanent solution to the flooding problem. Despite recent heavy downpours causing flash floods, the project remains on track for completion within the stated 12-month timeline.
The flooding in Ijede has been attributed to blocked drainage channels, lack of proper drainage systems in some areas, and indiscriminate building across natural water channels. In response, the local council has mobilized engineers and relevant departments to immediately assess and clear blockages in main drainage channels. The Ikorodu Constituency II representative is also liaising with state ministries to expedite the ongoing drainage construction.
In a show of commitment, Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, has directed the contractor to immediately commence excavation work towards the discharge point and to prioritize the construction of culverts. Wahab assures that this ongoing work lays the groundwork for a permanent fix that will improve the quality of life for everyone in the Ijede community. Once the culvert work is stabilized, the concrete lining, part of the broader project scope, will continue.
The Lagos State government sincerely apologizes to the residents of the Ijede community for the inconvenience they are currently facing due to the flooding. Residents were left stranded as flood waters submerged homes, streets, and vehicles in the affected communities. Videos of the flooding situation are trending on social media.
However, Wahab states that the Lagos State government is committed to building infrastructure that works and endures. He assures that groundwork for a permanent solution is already in progress. The government remains dedicated to upgrading and constructing resilient drainage infrastructure across the state to prevent future flooding incidents, including in Ijede.
The ongoing efforts demonstrate the government's active engagement in addressing the flooding issue, despite the challenging conditions during the project period. The residents' calls for urgent government intervention have not fallen on deaf ears, and progress is being made towards a permanent solution.
