Lower Saxony stands firm on funding fiber optic expansion for faster Internet, announced by the SPD and Green parties recently. In 2024, a whopping 80 million euros will be allocated for this venture, making sure all past applications receive approval. SPD leader Grant Hendrik Tonne reassured that additional funds will be considered if needed. The objective is to ensure fast Internet availability, even in rural areas.

Originally, Digitization Minister Olaf Lies had expressed doubts about continuing state funding due to financial constraints. Instead, he suggested telecom firms handle the expansion's driving force.

A warning came from the "Glasfaserland Niedersachsen" alliance, stating that without municipal and state co-financing, Lower Saxony would lose federal funds for fiber optic expansion.

Defying Olaf Lies' initial concerns, the SPD and Green parties in Parliament decided to invest 80 million euros to keep funding fiber optic home connections. This decision underscores the Parliament's aim of providing fast Internet statewide, even in rural areas.

On a deeper level, Lower Saxony continues to fund this project because of several strategic and economic reasons:

  1. National Significance: Olaf Lies described this project as a "project of national importance." With a focus on energy transition and regional economy growth, it overpowers initial financial obstacles.
  2. Job Security and Economic Growth: The port expansion in Cuxhaven promises to create jobs for the energy sector, including wind turbine handling. This investment is critical in safeguarding long-term employment and strengthening the region's prospects.
  3. Strategic Advantage: Cuxhaven aims to become a central logistics hub for wind energy expansion within Germany and Europe. This strategic position bolsters the area's competitiveness and attractiveness for businesses.
  4. Government Support: The project secures up to €200 million from the “Joint Task for the Improvement of Regional Economic Structures” (GRW) of the federal government and Lower Saxony. This substantial government assistance demonstrates the project's importance and commitment to regional economic development.
  5. Long-term Benefits: The fiber optic infrastructure investment is part of a broader goal to enhance connectivity and encourage digital transformation in the region. Both these aspects contribute to sustainable economic growth.

In summary, Lower Saxony persists in funding the fiber optic expansion due to its strategic importance for the energy transition, regional economy development, job security, significant government support, and long-term benefits.
