Starnberger Brauhaus is primarily owned by Krombacher Brewery
The Starnberg Brewery, a well-known establishment in Wieling, Germany, is currently in discussions with the Krombacher group regarding potential growth opportunities. This partnership could see the construction of a new production site in the Starnberg industrial estate Schorn, aimed at addressing the brewery's current production limitations [1][2].
However, the planned brewery is currently on hold due to concerns over inadequate wastewater capacity in the region. Despite acquiring a 41,000 m² plot for the project, which includes plans for a second brewery with its own bottling line, discussions with relevant agencies are ongoing [1][2]. The project aims to alleviate the restrictions at the existing Wieling site, which is limited by water availability.
It's worth noting that only a few breweries in Germany have their own wastewater treatment plants, with the Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus in the Black Forest being one example. The unusually high volume of wastewater produced by a brewery, as in the case of the Starnberg Brewery, cannot be accommodated, transported, or processed by the sewer network or treatment plant, according to Stephanie Rapp [3].
In a significant development, Krombacher Schadeberg family's GL Verwaltungs GmbH has become the majority shareholder of the Starnberg Brewery. Krombacher has been a distribution partner for the Starnberg Brewery for around five years, and this new ownership marks a deeper partnership between the two entities.
Despite the change in ownership, products from the Starnberg Brewery will continue to be brewed in Wieling. The brewery is also considering the opening of further inns as part of its regional strategy.
Elsewhere, the Starnberg Brewery has faced challenges. Products from the brewery were recently removed from 40 Fristo beverage markets due to declining sales. By October, the beer from the Starnberg Brewery will be more expensive due to rising costs, though the exact increase in price is not disclosed for competitive reasons.
The wastewater disposal remains a significant issue in the construction plans for the new production site. No new developments have happened publicly regarding a potential solution, with Mayor Patrick Janik stating that no updates have been shared without the wastewater association mentioned. The Starnberg Zweckverband has not yet established a general dewatering plan for the association's area.
SPD Bundestag member Carmen Wegge has addressed the required sewage capacities, which are now being denied by the Starnberger Zweckverband. A thorough and in-depth review has been conducted to analyze under what conditions the discharge and treatment of wastewater would be feasible, even considering potential expansion measures.
In more positive news, a "Starnberger Wirtshaus" serving Bavarian specialties and Bavarian beer already exists in Frankfurt and Olpe (North Rhine-Westphalia). As the Starnberg Brewery continues its discussions with the Krombacher group and local authorities, the future of the brewery and its expansion plans remains to be seen.

Despite the planned expansion of the Starnberg Brewery to the Schorn industrial area, the wastewater disposal issue persists, causing delays in the construction of the new production site. Meanwhile, the current weather conditions could potentially affect the growth of barley crops, a crucial ingredient in the production of sports drinks and beers.
