The anticipated Alaska Summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin is approaching, and concerns about potential territorial concessions by Ukraine to Russia have arisen. However, Kyiv firmly rejects such a possibility.

In a bid to show solidarity with Ukraine and influence the U.S.-Russia summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held video conferences with several heads of state and government from Berlin on Wednesday. Among them was Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet with Zelensky in London on Thursday, a day before the Alaska Summit. This meeting is not part of the Alaska Summit itself. Downing Street confirmed the meeting upon request. The expected outcome of the talks is a united front of Western support for Ukraine and an effort to influence the U.S.-Russia summit toward a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Both leaders view the summit as a "viable chance to make progress" in ending the war in Ukraine. Starmer's hosting of Zelensky in London was a show of the U.K.'s support for Ukraine shortly before the summit.

During the virtual meetings with Trump and other European leaders, Trump assured them he would prioritize achieving a ceasefire during his meeting with Putin. However, there remains concern among Ukraine and European leaders that the bilateral summit could sideline their interests and potentially favor Moscow, risking Ukraine's and Europe's security.

Starmer travelled to the US to join European and NATO leaders for talks with Trump, indicating coordinated efforts to sustain pressure on Russia and support Ukraine prior to Trump and Putin's talks in Alaska.

In summary, Zelensky and Starmer aim to ensure Western unity and maximize diplomatic leverage on Trump ahead of the Alaska Summit, hoping the talks will lead to a ceasefire or progress toward ending the conflict in Ukraine, while remaining cautious about the risks of the bilateral U.S.-Russia dialogue excluding Ukraine's interests.

  1. 2. Amidst political discussions surrounding the Alaska Summit, the ongoing video conferences and meetings between world leaders, including Zelensky and Starmer, serve as a platform to discuss not only Ukraine's general news but also shared concerns about the potential influence of war-and-conflicts on global politics, in this case, those concerning Ukraine and Europe.
