Star Wars: Lego Edition - Reassembling the Galaxy Ponders Ethical Dilemmas of Building
In the vibrant world of Lego, the miniseries "Rebuild the Galaxy" is currently streaming on Disney, offering a fresh take on the iconic Star Wars universe. The series features Sig and Dev Greebling, brothers from a planet named Finesa, who find themselves in the midst of an extraordinary adventure.
The narrative centres around Sig, a humble farm boy, who accidentally activates a Jedi relic called the "Cornerstone." This relic, in an unexpected twist, rewrites reality, turning the established Star Wars universe upside down. In this alternate universe, Darth Vader leads the Jedi, and the Sith have replaced the Rebel Alliance as the antagonists.
Sig is joined by Jedi Bob and their allies in a quest to restore the galaxy to its original state. However, they face challenges not only from the Sith but also from Sig's brother Dev, who longs to leave his humble existence behind.
The series subverts traditional multiverse narratives by deliberately overturning and remixing canonical Star Wars lore, characters, and alliances in playful and unpredictable ways. For instance, formerly good characters like Admiral Ackbar and Salacious B. Crumb are presented as evil, and vice versa. This approach embraces the freedom to poke fun at the franchise, disrupt conventional morality and alliances, and create a narrative where usual multiverse rules are intentionally subverted for storytelling and humor.
The miniseries is set in a Lego-rendered Star Wars universe affected by an apocalyptic crisis. The brothers discover a mysterious Jedi temple housing a single-stud Lego brick called "The Cornerstone." The answer to whether the changes in the universe were worth it depends on personal taste, but the final moments of the specials hint at a potential sequel series, showing the new characters exploring the reshaped world they created.
The miniseries continues to question the responsibility of creating something new from pre-existing materials and explores the karmic ramifications of playing god in a universe comprised of sentient Lego minifigures. For the most part, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy has a lot of fun asking unexpected questions of itself, making it a meta-textual and playful reimagining rather than a straightforward alternate-universe story.
In a pre-credits teaser, a new bounty hunter character is introduced, a combination of two familiar characters in a pun-based form. This miniseries is a must-watch for Star Wars fans and Lego enthusiasts alike, offering a unique blend of humour, action, and a fresh perspective on a beloved franchise.
