Star Trek: Strange New Worlds devoted six months to creating puppet versions of their cast for a particularly extraordinary episode, noting that extensive discussions were necessary for this unusual undertaking.

In an unprecedented move for the Star Trek franchise, the fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will feature an episode where the entire cast transforms into puppets. This unique and highly-anticipated episode has been in the works for over six months, as co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The production process involved extensive prep meetings and conversations about puppet-related techniques and crew management, with Myers stating that there was "easily more than six months of work on it." The puppets were crafted and operated by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and the episode was directed by Jordan Canning, a veteran director on the series.

The extended production time was due to the unique nature of the episode, requiring a very different filming approach compared to regular episodes. Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers and creative partner Akiva Goldsman discussed the making of the puppet episode in the same interview, with Myers concluding that the process was challenging but seeing the puppets made everything worthwhile.

Christina Chong, who plays La'An Noonien-Singh, described the upcoming puppet episode as "insane." Rebecca Romijn, No. 1 in the series, said that the puppet episode has an "amazing script." Jess Bush, the actor for Chapel, found the puppet episode to be "pure joy."

A teaser for the puppet episode has already been released, showing Captain Pike, played by Anson Mount, in puppet form seated on his chair at the U.S.S. Enterprise. Filming for season 4 occurred from March to August 2025, with the puppet episode set to premiere in 2026.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is currently airing on Paramount Plus, with new episodes dropping every Thursday. Don't miss out on this exciting season, and get ready for the next one in 2026, which will include the much-talked-about puppet episode.
