Star Trek: Picard's Terry Matalas reveals insights about his prospective legacy sequel series, highlighting the extensive effort he's invested in it.

The current state of the Star Trek universe is a mix of progress and uncertainty, with some projects moving forward while others remain in limbo.

One such project is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a series currently streaming new episodes on Thursdays on Paramount+. This series, set in the era of Captain Christopher Pike, is a must-watch for fans of the franchise.

However, the recent merger between Paramount and Skydance has put other Star Trek projects in a holding pattern. No new announcements were made at the San Diego Comic-Con, and no new details about potential Picard follow-ups have been revealed since the merger.

Despite this, there is still excitement surrounding a potential Picard sequel series, tentatively titled Star Trek: Legacy. Showrunner Terry Matalas has hinted at a popular species being involved and has even typed up a 30-page manuscript for the series. However, it remains far from becoming a reality, with no official green light for production and no updates suggesting imminent development.

Matalas has moved on from Star Trek, recently finishing work on Marvel’s Vision Quest series. He has clarified that his manuscript was not an official pitch to Paramount+ execs, and currently, Star Trek does not seem to be accepting pitches for new projects.

The upcoming Trek series is Starfleet Academy, but other proposed follow-ups to Strange New Worlds are actively moving forward. However, the future of Star Trek: Legacy remains uncertain, with no official word on whether it will ever see the light of day.

Despite this, Matalas has not entirely shut the door on pitching the hypothetical Picard sequel series one day. He had plans for Seven of Nine's captain send-out phrase, indicating that he has given thought to the series' details.

Robert Picardo, who played the Emergency Medical Hologram character in Star Trek: Voyager, does not believe the merger will significantly impact the Star Trek franchise. However, the future of the franchise remains to be seen as the dust settles from the recent merger.

In summary, while Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a series worth catching up on, the future of the franchise is uncertain, with some projects moving forward and others in limbo. The potential Picard sequel series, Star Trek: Legacy, remains a distant possibility, with no official updates suggesting imminent development.
