Star shortstop Carlos Correa gets traded to Houston Astros in unexpected move: Astros secure Correa's services, with whom they won the World Series before.

The Houston Astros have welcomed back a familiar face, as they've agreed to a trade with the Minnesota Twins that sees shortstop Carlos Correa return to his former team. The deal, which was finalized on August 1, 2025, comes with Correa having $103.4 million remaining on his contract through 2028, with the Twins agreeing to pay $33 million of that amount. In return, the Twins receive left-handed pitching prospect Matt Mikulski.

Correa's return to Houston was facilitated by him waiving his no-trade clause. He is expected to play third base for the Astros, filling in for an injured Isaac Paredes. This move is part of the Astros’ efforts to strengthen their roster for a playoff push, while the Twins are continuing their salary dump amid a significant roster overhaul.

Correa's contract with the Twins was a six-year, $200 million deal signed in 2023, which included a no-trade clause. The Astros are now responsible for the remaining balance of about $70.4 million on Correa's contract after the Twins’ $33 million contribution.

Jeremy Peña is entrenched at shortstop for the Astros, meaning Correa will play third base, a position he has not played extensively in the big leagues. All three players - Correa, Peña, and Paredes - are under contract or team control through at least 2027.

This trade frees up significant cash for the Minnesota Twins, who are currently 51-57 and behind the third wild card spot in the American League. Meanwhile, the Astros, who are currently atop the AL West with a record of 62-47, are bolstering their roster for a potential playoff run.

In other transactions, the Twins have traded Harrison Bader to the Philadelphia Phillies, Brock Stewart to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Danny Coulombe to the Texas Rangers. They've also traded Willi Castro to the Cubs, clearing the way for Brooks Lee at shortstop in Minnesota.

Correa started his career with the Houston Astros, being the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft, winning Rookie of the Year in 2015, and being a key member of Houston's World Series-winning team in 2017. However, this season has not been his best, as he is slashing .267/.319/.386 with seven home runs in 93 games. Despite this, the Astros are confident that he will contribute positively to their team.

Carlos Correa stated that he did not like the direction the Minnesota Twins were headed in, which may have influenced his decision to waive his no-trade clause and return to Houston. The trade of Correa to the Astros clears up some financial obligations for the Twins, allowing them to focus on their roster rebuild.
