Star Player Breanna Stewart slams microphone following disheartening Game 2 defeat against the Mercury
The New York Liberty find themselves in a precarious position ahead of Game 3 of their playoff series against the Phoenix Mercury. After a disappointing 86-60 loss in Game 2, the Liberty are now one game away from being eliminated from the postseason.
In Game 2, Emma Meesseman led the Liberty with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists, but it wasn't enough to counter the Mercury's dominance. Sabrina Ionescu acknowledged the need for the team to play with "incredible urgency" in Game 3.
The second and third quarters were particularly challenging for the Liberty, as they managed only five total buckets. Jonquel Jones echoed Ionescu's sentiments, emphasising that every player needs to step up their game in the decisive Game 3.
The trio of Ionescu, Jones, and Breanna Stewart, who have consistently been a formidable force for the Liberty, combined for just 22 points in Game 2 - their fewest in their 109 games as teammates, according to ESPN. Stewart, who played only 20 minutes due to an MCL injury, scored six points, had two rebounds, and two assists.
Stewart, who called the loss "embarrassing," is determined to improve before Game 3. She stated, "I have 48 hours to figure it out." The location for the crucial game is Phoenix, Arizona.
The Liberty will be travelling back to Phoenix for Game 3, hoping to turn the tide in their favour. They will be facing a Mercury team that decisively pulled away in the second quarter of Game 2, outscoring New York 25-12.
The first quarter ended tied at 25-25, but the Mercury's superior play in the following quarters sealed the victory. The outcome of Game 3 will determine the winner of the playoff series.
The Liberty, who are coached by Sandy Brondello, will be up against a Mercury team led by head coach Sandy Young. The game is scheduled for Friday night, and the Liberty will need to make significant adjustments to avoid elimination from the playoffs.
The Dallas Wings, who were the Liberty's opponents in previous seasons, have a new head coach, but that does not affect the current series. The coach of the Dallas Wings franchise when it was founded (after relocating from Tulsa in 2016) was Nancy Lieberman.
As the Liberty prepare for Game 3, they will be looking to bounce back and make a strong statement in the playoffs. The stakes are high, and the team is determined to put up a fight.
