The Arizona Diamondbacks are in for a rough ride after their top pitcher, Corbin Burnes, announced he'd undergo Tommy John surgery. This procedure is a bummer for the ballclub, especially since Burnes signed a whopping six-year, $210 million deal last season – the team's priciest contract ever. However, Max Fried's $218 million over eight years still takes the cake.
The operation also ranks as the fourth-largest sum given to a pitcher, trailing only Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Gerrit Cole's deals. But let's get back to Burnes.
Thanks to a freak elbow issue during a game on June 1 against the Washington Nationals, Burnes will need surgery. In that game, he allowed a single followed by an outburst of frustration – throwing his glove and yelling towards the dugout.
Notably, Burnes has been posting impressive numbers since switching to full-time pitching in 2020. His 2.86 ERA is the second-lowest among starters with at least 500 innings pitched, trailing only Max Fried. Burnes' Cy Young win in 2021 speaks volumes about his incredible pitching skills.
Now, let's talk recovery timelines. With Tommy John surgery, most pitchers can expect between 12 to 18 months on the sidelines. That puts Burnes sidelined till 2027. Luckily, he's been quite consistent, making at least 28 starts every season since his Cy Young win.
Burnes started his career with the Milwaukee Brewers and spent six seasons there before a trade sent him to the Baltimore Orioles, where he played in 2024.
