Stand up for children caught in conflict, urges World Council of Churches chief

The Rev. Jerry Pillay, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches based in Geneva, Switzerland, has expressed his support for the "Stand up for Children in War" campaign. In a powerful call to action, Pillay emphasizes the importance of people of faith in demanding protection for children caught up in armed conflict and violence.

Pillay specifically mentioned the 48.8 million children who are currently displaced due to civil war and violence, a number that has increased by 25% over the last 30 years. These children are facing cruel and ongoing violations of their most basic rights and human dignity, with many left without parents and vulnerable to trafficking and abuse.

The Rev. Pillay's appeal extends beyond demanding protection for these children. He urges people of faith to insist on accountability for all violations, particularly those affecting children's futures. This call includes ensuring humanitarian access and assistance to conflict-affected communities, a matter of fundamental moral responsibility and also a legal obligation.

The Rev. Pillay described the suffering borne by children in conflict situations around the world as intolerable and unacceptable. His call is not limited to the International Day of Peace, which falls on Sept. 21. Instead, it is a continuous appeal for the protection and wellbeing of these children.

The Rev. Pillay's call is not just about children in war. It also includes insisting on accountability for all violations. This comprehensive approach reflects a deep understanding of the complexities of conflict and the need for justice and accountability to prevent future suffering.

In his role as General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, the Rev. Pillay's voice carries significant weight. His appeal extends beyond the faith community, urging everyone to stand up for children in war and ensure their protection, humanitarian access, and assistance. This call to action serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of our global community.
