Stalled Mumbai monorail train carrying around 200 passengers halts in its tracks due to power failure; rescue operations are currently underway | Video
In the heart of Mumbai, on August 19, 2025, a monorail train stalled near Mysore Colony station due to a power supply failure. The incident occurred around 6.15 pm, causing a halt in services between Chembur and Bhakti Park.
Approximately 200 passengers were stranded on board, but they were safely rescued by a joint operation involving the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The rescue efforts utilized snorkel ladder vehicles and cranes, while ambulances and medical teams were on alert nearby, and BEST buses were deployed for transport.
Upon learning about the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured the safety of passengers as his highest priority and ordered a detailed investigation. He also confirmed that the monorail train had halted due to a technical glitch linked to a break in the power supply caused by excess weight, attributed to overcrowding from diverted passengers due to the Indian Railways Harbour Line closure during heavy rains.
The incident raised concerns about the monorail’s reliability during heavy rains and crowding. In response, an inquiry was initiated, and two monorail officials were suspended about a week later in connection to the incident. By August 28, 2025, the affected passengers have been rescued, the disruption resolved, services restored, and disciplinary actions underway.
The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), which operates the monorail, confirmed the disruption and deployed maintenance teams to resolve it quickly. Services between Wadala and Chembur are running smoothly on a single line, according to the MMMOCL.
A video of the rescue operation has surfaced on the internet, showcasing the swift and coordinated efforts of the rescue teams. Passengers onboard the stalled train contacted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's emergency helpline (1916) for assistance. The Mumbai Fire Brigade was rushed to the spot with three snorkel vehicles to assist in relief operations.
The Maharashtra Chief Minister is in constant contact with relevant agencies regarding the monorail incident, ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures during heavy rains and overcrowding in public transportation systems.
