Stalking suspect allegedly surprises and shoots dead three police officers in Pennsylvania, claims prosecutor

In a shocking turn of events, a shooting in North Codorus, Pennsylvania, has claimed the lives of three police officers and left two others wounded. The incident unfolded during a 15-hour ordeal that began after a trail camera captured Matthew James Ruth, the suspect, peering into his ex-girlfriend's home.

The confrontation took place on a rural road in North Codorus, about 44 miles north of Baltimore. Four plainclothes detectives from the Northern York County Regional Police Department were immediately fired upon by Ruth upon entering the house. The shootout resulted in the tragic deaths of Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser.

The wounded detective and sheriff's officer remain hospitalized, with one in critical but stable condition. The community is in mourning as they learn about this devastating loss.

The motive for the shooting was confirmed to be domestic violence by Detective Mark Baker. Prior to the shootout, the ex-girlfriend's pickup truck mysteriously caught fire, and she suspected Ruth was behind it, but she asked police not to investigate.

Police returned to the house the following day and discovered the door was unlocked. They left with several bags of potential evidence. Ruth was killed in a gunfight with two officers outside the home.

The suspect, Matthew James Ruth, was armed with an AR-style rifle with a suppressor. Neighbor Rose Miller remembered Ruth working on Boy Scout fundraisers.

Community members held American flags and saluted as police and emergency vehicles formed a procession to the coroner's office. A vigil was held at a church in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, to honor the fallen officers. People left flowers outside the slain officers' headquarters as a tribute.

Gov. Josh Shapiro expressed concern about the increasing use of guns to resolve disputes in society, calling for a renewed focus on addressing domestic violence and promoting peace.

As the investigation continues, the community is left to grapple with the loss of these brave officers. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
