Stalker's harassment left actress Anna Friel feeling threatened and startled in the courtroom.
In a shocking turn of events, British actress Anna Friel has been the victim of a three-year stalking ordeal at the hands of Phil Appleton.
The saga began in 2022 when Appleton, a stranger to Friel, approached her and her daughter during a walk in Windsor, Berkshire. He handed Friel's daughter an empty pack of cigarettes, presumably intended for the actress.
In August of the same year, Appleton pleaded guilty to a stalking offence. His actions escalated over time, with him sending multiple messages to Friel and visiting her home address several times. The actress regularly received emails from Appleton offering spiritual guidance, which she chose to ignore in the hope that he would stop.
However, Appleton's stalking continued, leaving Friel feeling threatened and always having to look over her shoulder. In December 2024, the situation reached a disturbing climax when Appleton was caught looking through Friel's lounge window. CCTV footage revealed that he had been standing outside her home for several minutes, making "facial expressions as though he was communicating" and mouthing "I love you" while holding up a ring.
On 10 December 2024, Appleton left an empty packet of cigarettes and a wooden ring at Friel's home. The following day, he was arrested.
Appleton's actions did not go unpunished. He was remanded in custody for six months until he was granted conditional bail in August. He pleaded guilty to stalking Friel and was handed a 15-year restraining order and a 24-month community order.
As part of the restraining order, Appleton is not allowed to approach, follow, or contact Friel or her daughter, directly or indirectly, and must stay away from the area surrounding Friel's home in Windsor. Judge Alan Blake will monitor Appleton's compliance with the community order requirements electronically for the next 12 months.
Despite the harrowing ordeal, Friel did not attend the hearing but read a victim statement in court, detailing the impact the stalking had on her life. The actress chose not to respond to Appleton's messages, hoping that he would stop, but her efforts were in vain.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of stalking and the importance of taking such incidents seriously. Friel's bravery in speaking out about her experience will hopefully encourage others to do the same and seek help if they find themselves in a similar situation.
