Germany to Host EURO Matches at Bayern Arena Instead of SAP Garden - Staging the European Championships in Germany replaced by holding them at the Bernabéu Stadium instead
EuroBasket 2029: Madrid Secures Final Phase, No Games in Munich for Germany
Germany has been overlooked in the allocation for the 2029 Basketball European Championship, with the tournament instead set to take place in Athens, Ljubljana, Tallinn, and Madrid. Initially, Munich had been proposed as the German venue, but the bid was later withdrawn.
The opening match of the tournament could potentially be held in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, where Real Madrid football club typically plays their home games, attracting a crowd of up to 80,000 spectators.
Conversely, Germany previously served as one of the hosts for the coronavirus-postponed European Championship in 2022. At that time, Cologne hosted a preliminary round group, while the entire final round from the round of 16 took place in Berlin. In 2026, Berlin will host the entire Women's Basketball World Championship.
The Women's European Championship will partly take place in Hamburg in 2025, with the German women's basketball team competing during the preliminary round.
FIBA Europe selected Estonia, Greece, Slovenia, and Spain as the hosts for the tournament, with Madrid securing the final phase. This decision was made during a meeting held in Riga, Latvia, in May 2025, reflecting FIBA Europe's commitment to a multi-country format, first introduced in 2015. The decision permits expanded European participation and improved audience engagement across various countries.

Despite Munich's initial bid for the Basketball European Championship in 2029, Germany will not be hosting any games as the tournament will instead take place in Athens, Ljubljana, Tallinn, and Madrid. A community action could focus on encouraging youth in Munich to engage more with sports, such as youth basketball, to maintain their interest and potential for participation.
