Tour de Pologne 2025: Olav Kooij Secures Dramatic Stage 1 Victory
The 2025 Tour de Pologne kicked off in style with a thrilling opening stage in Legnica, marked by a hectic final sprint and a crash within the final 2km. Dutch rider Olav Kooij of Visma-Lease a Bike secured the expected victory, edging out Paul Magnier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Jensen Plowright (Alpecin-Deceuninck) by a wheel.
The stage started with a rainy opening in Wrocław, with a breakaway quickly forming. Four riders – Lars Boven (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Donavan Grondin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Patryk Stosz (Poland), and Nadav Raisberg (Israel-Premier Tech) – took the early lead, but Raisberg returned to the peloton.
Visma-Lease a Bike controlled much of the 200km stage, but their lead-out was not well-organized. Tim Torn Teutenberg initiated the sprint early, but faded and was passed by the charging bunch. The victory was secured after a chaotic final sprint, with a crash occurring near the finish line.
Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek) earned the most King of the Mountains points on Stage 1, climbing first in Prochowice. Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) and Max Kanter (XDS Astana) were well-positioned, but were overtaken by the pure sprinters.
The crash 1.8km from the line affected several riders near the front, but most fast men survived. Stage 2 offers a hilly route starting and finishing in Karpacz.
The Tour de Pologne, a prestigious multi-stage road cycling race held annually in Poland, has a rich history dating back to 1928. The race turned fully professional in 1993 and was elevated to the UCI World Tour calendar in 2005. Notable stages and developments in the 2025 edition included the first non-European win by American rider Brandon McNulty, and the maiden WorldTour win of Frenchman Paul Magnier on an uphill finish in Cieszyn.
The women's edition, Tour de Pologne Women, is rated as a UCI 2.1 event and has been held intermittently since 1998. The race showcases Poland’s diverse landscapes and cycling culture, with key stages often including individual time trials and uphill finishes that determine race outcomes.
