Roger Adrià Wins Stage 1 of Vuelta a Burgos 2022

Roger Adrià of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe clinched an exciting victory in the opening stage of the 42nd Vuelta a Burgos, held in Castilla y León. The 204km route featured undulating terrain, and a breakaway of six riders formed 175km from the finish.

The breakaway, consisting of Dries De Bondt (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Carlos García Pierna (Burgos Burpellet BH), Javier Ibáñez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel Euskadi), Joan Gamundi, and Asier Pablo Gonzalez (Illes Balears Arabay), held on until the Alto de la Mazorra climb.

As the race approached the final stages, several attacks were launched, including Samuel Fernández (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA). However, the catch was made after the penultimate categorized climb. The race then came down to a sprint finish between Roger Adrià and Jordan Labrosse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale).

Adrià opened up the final run to the line inside 400 metres to go, but Labrosse passed him. Showing great determination, Adrià found a second wind and out-sprinted Labrosse to claim his third professional victory. Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious) finished third, four seconds down on Adrià.

After the race, Adrià expressed his happiness about winning in Spain and in the Vuelta a Burgos. He thanked his team for looking after him well and saving his legs for the final climb. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's roster for the upcoming stages includes Jai Hindley and Giulio Pellizzari.

While Adrià is clearly a main contender for the general classification (GC), the other primary contenders would be those close in the GC and top climbers or overall favorites from the teams participating. However, the exact names for 2022 after stage 1 cannot be confirmed from the search results. The 2025 edition shows a similar pattern of contenders clustered close behind Adrià, including riders like Jordan Labrosse, Afonso Eulálio, Damiano Caruso, and Egan Bernal.

Unfortunately, the race was marred by a crash involving Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) in one of the final bends. Both riders needed to assess their injuries.

The Vuelta a Burgos continues with stage 2 tomorrow, promising more exciting racing in this prestigious Spanish cycling event.

Roger Adrià's victory in Stage 1 of Vuelta a Burgos 2022 proves that he is a formidable competitor in sports, especially cycling. Jordan Labrosse, his opponent in the final sprint finish, also showcases his sports prowess as a contender in the event.
