Stafford's Return to Action for Rams Possible This Week in Practice

Matthew Stafford, the quarterback of the Los Angeles Rams, is currently dealing with an aggravated disc in his back, which has kept him out of training camp and prevented regular practice participation. Despite this setback, Stafford is expected to resume workouts this week [1].

The Rams' star quarterback has been progressing well from the injury, having thrown around 60-68 passes during limited sessions. However, he did not participate in practice as expected due to ongoing discomfort [1][2][4]. The Rams are taking a cautious approach to Stafford’s return to full practice, with head coach Sean McVay emphasising a day-to-day approach [5].

The Rams are hopeful that Stafford will be available for the Week 1 season opener against the Houston Texans, which is scheduled for September 7 in Inglewood, California [1][4]. However, the actual readiness of Stafford remains uncertain due to the sensitive nature of back injuries and his history of serious injuries [1][3].

Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is considered a strong emergency option should Stafford be unavailable at the start of the season [1]. The Rams are aiming to have Stafford ready but remain realistic about potential risks given the Rams’ offensive line challenges and the physical nature of the opening opponent, Houston.

Stafford, who joined the Rams after his tenure with the Detroit Lions, had a successful first season with the team, leading the Rams to a win in Super Bowl LVI against the Cincinnati Bengals. In the 2024 season, he completed 340 of 517 passes (65.8 percent) for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions [6].

Throughout his career, Stafford has completed 63.4 percent of his passes, totaling 59,809 yards, 377 touchdowns, and 188 interceptions [7]. The 37-year-old quarterback was selected with the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia. In total, Stafford has started in 222 regular-season games with the Detroit Lions (2009-20) and Rams.

Stafford's career with the Detroit Lions ended in 2020, and he did not play for the Rams before the 2021 season [3]. The location of the Rams' season opener is Inglewood, California [8].
