Wattenscheid 09: Gearing Up for the Oberliga Season Ahead

Summer at Wattenscheid 09 is like a breath of fresh air, filled with changes since the financial crisis. The team's major issues have been addressed, and the only question mark hangs over Emre Yesilova's future. Moreover, a new central defender is expected to join the team.

The attack has been beefed up, and the exciting return to the newly renovated Lohrheidestadion fuels additional enthusiasm. With over 120 season tickets already sold for the kick-off, the board chairman, Ertan Ilce, has set a target of 500.

Popular Preparation Plan Update

However, the club's preparation plan had to be adjusted: The initial test is no longer scheduled at RW Leithe as anticipated. Originally meant to inaugurate the new artificial turf, this plan fell through due to the Leither starting their preparation later and FISU taking over the Lohrheidestadion for upcoming athletics events.

To kick things off locally, 09 will play against Schwarz-Weiß 08, where coach Timo Janczak awaits a warm welcome. They will then head to SW Eppendorf for their 90th anniversary celebration. According to the sports director, Richard Weber, "playing at local clubs in Wattenscheid at the beginning is good," and they would have also liked to test the place in Leithe, but the game can be rescheduled.

Upcoming Challenges

The focus shifts to the sports aspect after the initial hiccups. 09 faces challenging matches against Westphalian and Oberligists, along with De Graafschap U21 in the Netherlands. Although the early onset of the Regionalliga rules out a few opponents, 09 is looking forward to testing at eye level or even a league higher before the start of the season.
