Stadium-preferring football enthusiasts rank their desired venues, with Real Madrid trailing behind their rivals as the most sought-after destination, according to a recent survey.
Top 20 Most Desirable Football Stadiums Outside the UK for Fans to Visit
Football fans worldwide have spoken, and their top choices for stadiums to visit outside the UK have been revealed. According to a poll of 2,000 respondents, Barcelona's Camp Nou comes out on top as the most desired stadium for football fans to visit.
Camp Nou, with an approximate capacity of over 99,000, is renowned for its size, history, and atmosphere. Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu comes in second place, with Italy’s San Siro in Milan securing third position.
The list, which reflects fans' desire to visit iconic football venues worldwide, also includes Brazil’s Maracanã and Argentina’s La Bombonera. Other notable stadiums on the list include Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Allianz Arena in Munich, Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, and FNB Stadium (Soccer City) in Johannesburg.
The popularity of these stadiums can be attributed to their capacity and scale, historical significance, unique atmosphere and fan culture, and modern architecture and facilities.
Camp Nou tops global fan wishlists, followed by Spain’s Bernabéu and Italy’s San Siro. South American stadiums like Maracanã and La Bombonera also rank due to their rich footballing legacy and fan passion. Asia’s Bukit Jalil and Lusail Stadium also attract fans interested in newer, large venues with world cup histories.
San Siro ranks third, with Milan clubs beating out rivals Juventus. Arsenal's Emirates Stadium rounded off the top 10 in the poll. When fans were asked to rank grounds purely on their understanding of matchday atmosphere, Anfield came out on top.
An interactive map of the top 10 stadiums was also plotted as part of the research. Juventus' stadium ranked 16th in the top 20 list. Liverpool fans have something to cheer after winning the Premier League this season, with Anfield ranking fourth in the list.
Comfortable seating was also important, according to 50% of respondents. Excellent views of the pitch were the most important factor for fans in creating the world's best football stadiums, according to 52% of respondents.
This research was commissioned by OLBG ahead of the new football seasons. Manchester United's Old Trafford ranked seventh, and Manchester City's Etihad finished ninth. Wembley came in sixth in the poll of desired stadiums to visit.
35% of football fans have a bucket list of stadiums they dream of visiting. More than a third (38%) of supporters polled admitted to backing a team outside the UK. 18% of these fans have as many as five stadiums earmarked to visit.
