In a heartfelt tribute, the Dragon Stadium was adorned in black as a tribute to the historic captain of FC Porto, Jorge Costa. The former Portuguese international passed away on August 5th, following a cardiac arrest at the Olival, where he was assisted with a defibrillator.
The tribute, which took place at the Dragon Stadium during a match against Vitória SC, was a moment of great emotion for fans and players alike. The crowd applauded Costa throughout the match, and FC Porto fans displayed cards with Costa's name and number (2) as a poignant reminder of their beloved hero.
Jorge Costa, born in Porto in 1971, was best known for his 15-year tenure at FC Porto, where he played 383 games as a central defender. He was celebrated for his aggressive and physical style, earning nicknames like Bicho and Tanque. Over his career, he won an impressive 24 major titles with Porto, including eight Primeira Liga championships, the 2003 UEFA Cup, and most notably the 2004 UEFA Champions League under coach José Mourinho.
Costa's leadership qualities on and off the pitch left a lasting impact on the team and its fans. After retiring from playing, he transitioned to management and later became FC Porto’s director of football from June 2024 until his death in August 2025. His legacy remains vibrant among Porto fans, who remember him as a symbol of "Portismo".
A minute of silence was observed during the tribute, although not all in the stadium respected it. FC Porto and supporters mourned Costa's passing due to cardiac arrest at age 53, highlighting his embodiment of Porto’s values: dedication, leadership, passion, and an unyielding conquest spirit.
Costa wore the number 2 during his time at FC Porto, and his memory will forever be etched in the club's history. His historical significance lies in his defensive prowess, captaincy during Porto’s golden era including their iconic 2004 Champions League victory, and his lifelong connection to the club that profoundly shaped Porto’s identity and inspired generations of fans.
