Stadium lighting at Bremen Weser undergoes upgrade
The Weser Stadium, home to SV Werder Bremen, is currently undergoing a significant floodlight replacement project. The initiative is a preventive replacement, necessitated by the changing requirements from the German Football Association (DFL) and modern TV broadcasting for stadium lighting[1].
In partnership with LEDVANCE, the stadium aims to revamp its floodlight and lighting system, bringing it up to UEFA standards[3]. The new floodlights will be equipped with modern LED technology, integrated into the stadium's iconic floodlight masts. This upgrade offers several advantages:
1. Compliance with updated football association and broadcasting standards. 2. Improved lighting quality suitable for high-definition TV broadcasts. 3. Enhanced sustainability through energy-efficient LED technology. 4. Reduced energy consumption and maintenance needs compared to the old lighting system, due to the robust performance and operational efficiency of LEDs in high-demand environments[1][3].
The floodlight replacement project involves the installation of 320 new lights, sourced from Austria. Each new floodlight boasts a lifespan of 50,000 hours[2]. Eike Wendt, project manager at Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH, has explained that the old technology was much more maintenance-intensive[4].
Marcel Schwartzrock, one of the lighting technicians working at the Weser Stadium, describes the project as "an absolutely gigantic task." He is confident that the result will be "awesome," as the new floodlights will provide a much more uniform and directed light on the field, making it brighter[5].
Despite the energy efficiency improvements, the floodlights account for only one percent of the Weser Stadium's total energy costs, and the replacement project is estimated to cost approximately one million euros[6]. However, the new floodlights are expected to reduce energy consumption by about 30 percent, although they will not have a significant impact on the stadium's overall energy costs[7].
The floodlight replacement project is progressing well, with about half of the work already completed[8]. The next Werder game at the Weser Stadium will be on August 9 against Udinese Calcio in a friendly[9]. Schwartzrock is optimistic that the new floodlights will meet the demands of broadcasters, ensuring the stadium remains a top choice for sporting events and TV broadcasts.
