In a significant development, the expert jury selected the plans of O+M, Carsten Otto and Christian Mueller, Architects GmbH BDA from Dresden, along with LOR Landscape Architects Sabine Otto and Manja Richter PartGmbH, for the renovation of the sports facility at the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahnsportpark in Berlin. This decision was made in December 2022, following a Europe-wide architectural and urban planning competition launched in April of the same year.

The renovation project, estimated to cost over 200 million euros, will take place in three construction phases. The Berlin Senate is investing approximately 110 million euros in the new stadium, with the remainder coming from various sources.

The renovation plans include the addition of several sports facilities such as football and beach volleyball courts, tennis courts, a multi-purpose hall, and more. The new stadium is expected to accommodate around 20,000 spectators, similar to the existing one, and is designed to host games of the 2nd and 3rd football Bundesliga.

Historically significant parts of the stadium and the park will be preserved, ensuring a balance between modernisation and respect for the park's heritage. The demolition of the old stadium is scheduled to begin in early summer 2024.

A centrally located community centre and an extensive redesign of the adjacent Mauerpark are also part of the renovation plans. The Max-Schmeling-Halle, a facility for school and club sports, is located next to the stadium.

The future sports campus at the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahnsportpark will focus on themes of inclusion and barrier-free access. The new stadium is planned to be completed by mid-2027, a year earlier than originally planned.

Additional information on similar sports projects in Berlin can be found on the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing's website. It's worth noting that the renovation of the Mommsenstadion and the location for the new Hertha stadium are subjects of separate disputes and discussions.

More pictures of the project, as well as updates on its progress, can be found on the department's website. The entire sports park in Prenzlauer Berg is set for a complete rebuild, with the renovation and modernization concept for the sports area having been approved in December 2022.
